Orthodontic Auxiliaries
Separators or Spacers
Separators, also known as spacers, are small rubber doughnuts placed between your teeth to create space for orthodontic bands. They gently push your teeth apart so that the bands can be properly fitted during your next appointment. Separators are temporary and will be removed before the bands are placed. While wearing separators, avoid sticky foods, toothpicks, or floss, as they can dislodge the separators. If a separator becomes dislodged or lost, be sure to inform the orthodontic team as soon as possible so it can be replaced.
Elastics (Rubber Bands)
Elastics, or rubber bands, play an important role in improving the fit of your upper and lower teeth by applying consistent pressure. They are typically used in conjunction with braces to help guide your bite into proper alignment. Your orthodontic team will educate and demonstrate how to properly wear the elastics to ensure you are comfortable and confident in their use. For optimal results, it's essential to wear the elastics exactly as prescribed by your orthodontist, as they work most efficiently when worn consistently.
Retainers
Retainers are either removable or fixed devices used to maintain the new positions of your teeth after your orthodontic treatment is complete. They ensure that your teeth do not shift back into their original positions. Your orthodontist will provide specific instructions on how to care for your retainer and how long you should wear it. Wearing your retainer as directed is critical to preserving your results and preventing any regression in your treatment.
